Artist's Statement

Giulia Zaniol is a printmaker artist based in London. She has recently become ARE, Associate member of the Royal Society of Printmaker-Painters. She has won several awards since graduating from her MA at Camberwell College and her work was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2008 and is part of the V&A and Clifford Chance collections. In the last years Giulia has been producing etchings, digital prints and drawings on her hometown: Venice. Her focus has been the transformations caused by modernity and mass tourism on the fragile texture of the city. The result has been a series of clashing imaginary of modern and traditional architecture immerse in patterns that would underline the city's strong bond with its history and tradition. Giulia's patterns in fact take inspiration from XIV to XVI century Venetian embroideries. Lately her attention has moved from Venice onto utopia cities such as those described in Calvino's 'Invisible Cities'. Through the development of this new body of work, she is producing imaginary scenes of fantastic cities populated by extraordinary characters and surreal architecture and objects.
