Artist's Statement
Giulia Zaniol is a printmaker and painter based in London. She has recently become ARE, Associate member of the Royal Society of Printmaker-Painters. She has won several awards since graduating from her MA at Camberwell College and her work has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2010. Her prints are part of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Ashmolean Museum of Art in Oxford and Clifford Chance Ltd. prints collections. In the last years Giulia has been producing paintings, etchings and drawings on city landscapes. Her focus has been the transformations caused by modernity on the fragile texture of the city. The result has been a series of clashing imaginary of modern and traditional architectures immerse in patterns that would underline the city's strong bond with its history and tradition. Giulia's patterns in fact take inspiration at times from XIV to XVI century Venetian embroideries at times from William Morris floral designs. Lately her attention has moved onto utopia cities such as those described in Calvino's 'Invisible Cities'. Through the development of this fresh body of work, she is producing imaginary scenes of fantastic scenarios populated by extraordinary characters and surreal architecture and objects.
